Data Aggregation for AI Drone Training
By MATTHEW WEISSMAN
The United Kingdom has begun to give defense companies access to images and videos collected by drones in Ukraine. This large-scale data aggregation utilizes over six million records to help companies develop military artificial intelligence systems. Specifically, this data can be used so that drones can effectively recognize threats, plan routes, and attack in "drone swarms." Datasets have proven to be extremely useful for training AI, and this data from the front lines in Ukraine can expose the AI to scenarios that it otherwise would never encounter. Governments have also been in the process of creating systems to defend against these drone swarms, including the UK's PANOPTES project to defend against drone attacks via lasers.
The UK has insisted that humans will still be involved in drone operations, but AI continues to become more prevalent for controlling drones in warfare. Having access to valuable data can give one country's AI-controlled drones an edge over the other and be a deciding factor in the outcome of a battle. This topic of data aggregation will become increasingly important and a strategic resource.
