Drones have been front and center in the Russia-Ukraine war. With AI technology now increasingly important in the drones’ targeting and guidance systems, AI data centers have become a new type of critical infrastructure for the war effort. As a result, drones are being employed by both sides to attack AI data centers, including three recent attacks by Ukraine on Russian AI company Yandex. These attacks have the potential to seriously disrupt AI services throughout the countries broadly, and may also disrupt the incredibly fast, AI-driven innovations in the use of drones in the war. Given the military importance of drones and the need for AI to optimize their use, both sides will undoubtedly take precautions to protect AI data centers like power plants and munitions factories.
