Earlier this month, the FAA briefly closed the airspace over El Paso, claiming "special security reasons," before reopening it just hours later. According to NPR, the closure came from US military counter-drone technology near the border. The Pentagon allowed counter-drone technology to be used on what they thought was a cartel drone. The FAA stopped all flights to ensure the safety of civilian aircraft. This incident should be learned from to prevent this mistakes again. The federal government needs clearer coordination frameworks and pre-established protocols between defense, homeland security, and aviation authorities to prevent similar issues.
